Reasons a Mummy Plant Should Be Part of Your Home or Office Décor

The mummy plant, more commonly known as a mum or chrysanthemum, is native to China where it was cultivated to be used as a culinary herb. The petals were used in salads, and the entire flower has been dried and brewed into tea for myriad health benefits.

Today in America, mums fill garden centers and yards as fall approaches, and they have become a symbol of autumn setting in.

Mums are as common as pumpkins at Halloween and turkey at Thanksgiving. Their colorful fall-colored blooms make them a staple holiday decoration, but they can be beautiful in your home or office any time of year.

Why should you have one? So many reasons!

A Mummy Plant Is Good for Homes and Offices

A Mummy Plant Is Good for Homes and Offices

Mums are a great addition to any home or office. The Chrysanthemum xmorifolium is a perennial, and a hardy one at that.

As long as you place it in a location where it will get plenty of sunlight, you can find these blossoms blooming for months. They don’t give off a particularly strong fragrance, but they are one of the few plants to offer bright and bold blooms when all other flowers are dying off or lying dormant after the summer.

Consider mums especially when you break out the fall decorations. With their bright yellows, oranges, and reds, they fit right in with Halloween and Thanksgiving décor.

Are Mummy Plants Good for the Feng Shui Flow of a Room?

Chrysanthemums are a symbol of health, abundance, and lasting success, thus they are great for establishing amazing feng shui balance in your home.

Choose from a variety of colors and place them in bright colored pots to really make a statement. Care for them well, and you can keep your mums in a healthy state for several weeks and even a couple of months during the fall.

Place them at entryways, on kitchen tables, and in living rooms, where friends and family gather. You can even place them in your office or home office for professional success.

Are Mummy Plants Easy to Grow and Maintain?

Mums are both hardy and easy to care for, both indoors and outdoors. They are likely in any local garden center or nursery each autumn, so fill up your cart with bushels upon bushels of these lovely flowers and prepare to place them strategically around your house and even on your doorstep.

How Do Mummy Plants Grow?

Mums will grow well in pots with plenty of sunlight and water.

What Kind of Soil Does a Mummy Plant Need?

Mums are not picky when it comes to soil. You can choose any indoor potting soil and expect your mum plant to thrive.

How Much Light Does a Mummy Plant Need?

Chrysanthemums need plenty of sunlight, so if you grow them indoors, be sure to place them near a window or even in a windowsill.

How Much Water Does a Mummy Plant Need?

You want the mum to get plenty of water, but you don’t want to drown it, especially considering you are likely entering the fall season. During the fall, you will be facing shorter days and longer nights, so you won’t need to add too much water.

Simply get familiar with sticking your finger in the soil to be sure it is moist. Once it dries out, add water until it runs through the bottom. For more information on watering plants, check out my other article for signs, tips, and tricks to avoid watering mistakes.

Other Conditions that Are Important to a Mummy Plant

Another thing to remember when it comes to the mum plant is to deadhead the flowers when they start to brown and crisp. Simply snip the top of the flower off the stem and wait for more growth.

Also, when you water, be sure you water the soil, not just the tops of the flowers. Mums also like air circulation, so you can crack a window on warmer days to ensure the plant gets nutrients from the outdoors.

This approach will also help you avoid too much humidity building up around the flowers. Once you are done with the flowers, you can compost them and get ready for next year’s blooms!

Alternatively, you can plant them in the ground in your garden about six weeks before Halloween and expect them to grow back again next year.

Mummy Plant Decorating Ideas

The best place for your mums is… everywhere!

Place them in brightly colored pots and spread them around your house, both for pops of color and for wonderful feng shui. You can buy them in smaller pots or in larger bushes, which you can place on your front doorstep.

This autumn, you really cannot go wrong with an abundance of mums.

Do Fake Mummy Plants Look Real?

Do Fake Mummy Plants Look Real

Of course, some of us cannot tolerate plants for allergy reasons, and others cannot give the time and attention to indoor plants. If this is the case for you, you should invest in the artificial version, which will still look just like the real thing and give you the same pops of color as live mums.

When the season ends, you can simply store them, wrapped in plastic, for next year. If you’re worried that fake mummy plants are not trendy, check out my piece on whether artificial plants and flowers are tacky.

Either way you decide to go, fake or real, you cannot go wrong filling your house and yard with mums each fall.
