Coneflowers, also called echinacea, are robust perennials from the daisy family. Native to the eastern and central U.S., they can be found in Colorado, Texas, and the Great Lakes. They grow to up to four feet tall and flower from midsummer into the fall.

If planting seeds, know that they probably won’t bloom for two to three years. This can be done indoors eight weeks before the last spring frost date. If the soil has reached 65ºF, they can be sowed outdoors.
When you plant them, place them one to three feet apart. If you’re growing them from the pot, make your hole twice the diameter of the pot and set the plant with the root ball even with the soil’s surface.
Fill the soil into the top of the root ball and water it well. To keep it moist and ward away weeds, spread thin layers of compost and mulch on the soil’s surface.
If you are growing them in pots, make sure the pot is deep enough for the taproot. Choose two- or three-gallon pots that have drainage holes. Use crushed gravel in the bottom of the pots to help with drainage.
Fill it halfway with potting mix and tamp it down. Plant the plant’s root ball an inch below the rim of the pot and spread out the roots. Slowly add soil until it’s level with the top of the root ball and tamp it down. Water the plant well.
Keep them in partial shade for a few days then place them in the full morning sun and partial afternoon shade. Every couple of weeks, fertilize them with a water-soluble 10-10-10 product.
