Why Agave Plants Are Good for Homes
Agave plants are a beauty to behold. Their dramatic foliage is primarily the reason so many homeowners love having them in their homes.
Agave are easy plants to care for. As long as they have plenty of light, they practically take care of themselves. You just need at least six hours of direct sunlight, well-draining soil, and to water them once a week to have a thriving agave plant.
Are Agave Trees Good for Your Feng Shui Flow?
The principles of Feng Shui teach us that balance is an important part of our environment. Healthy, thriving plants generate energy, growth, and prosperity in your home and contribute to your feng shui.
When a flowering plant is in bloom, it can successfully enhance the atmosphere and influence the balance and harmony in your home. But not all live plants are good for creating that harmonious balance, so choose your plants wisely and be prepared to maintain them properly.
When looking for live plants for feng shui, the best ones are low-maintenance plants that have uniformity in their look and feel.
So, are agave good for feng shui? Succulents can be an excellent way to bring uniformity and pleasing colors to your space, and that is why Agave is great to have in your home if you’re following feng shui practices.
They can help create a sense of calm, reduce the work you need to do to maintain the room, and help create an aesthetically pleasing positive element in the room.
Even with low-maintenance plants like agave, not everyone has the time or desire to care for a plant. So, it’s good to know that artificial plants can also help with feng shui.
An artificial agave will adorn your home with the beauty and splendor of the live plant. The spiky green leaves carry a natural look and appeal, making the fake one hard to distinguish from the real plant.
Agave Plants Are Easy to Grow and Maintain Any Time of the Year
In the right conditions, agave plants and trees are easy to grow and maintain indoors. Because agaves thrive in the sun, they don’t fare well when the temperature turns cool outdoors. In that case, you’ll want to bring them inside and care for them along with your other house plants.
How Do Agave Grow Indoors?
If you’re looking to add an agave to your décor, you might want to start your agave from seed. To grow Agave indoors from the seed, you’ll need to:
- Have a mixture of soil: garden soil, sand and broken brick/granite/perlite.
- Sterilize it in the microwave for about three minutes.
- Fill the potting container leaving about ½-inch at the top.
- Add plenty of water to the container and allow the water time to absorb.
- Place the agave seeds about 0.4 inches apart in the container.
- Cover the seeds with a layer of soil. You can also add a layer of gravel over the top as the finish.
- Add more water.
- Cover the container with glass, nylon or plastic to keep the moisture in.
- Place the pot in a warm spot within the home but not directly in the sun.
- The plant should start to germinate within two weeks (as early as four days).
- Remove the covering after two weeks.
- You should see it seeding as one leaf (this is normal).
- Spray the soil daily so that it doesn’t dry out and provide the plant with sufficient sunlight while avoiding direct exposure to the sun for a couple of months.
- Add pebbles to prevent the leaf from falling over (as that can lead to it dying).
- After another four weeks or so, you should see a new leaf forming (and additional leaves thereafter).
What Kind of Soil Do Agave Need to Grow Indoors?
You already know agaves need a lot of sunlight, but the soil is also important for its growth. A gritty soil mix (cacti mix) works well with agave.
Adding fertilizer to the soil in the spring also helps with its growth. If you choose to make your own cacti mix, include washed sand, soil, and a gritty texture like pebbles or pot shards.
How Much Water Do Agave Trees Need?
The first week of planting your agave seeds, you’ll need to water diligently. Moisture is important in keeping an agave alive as it takes root.
After the first week, you can cut the amount of water in half. The more the agave grows, the less water it will need. Continue tapering off the water to only watering an agave once every week or every other week.
Agave Plants Are Relatively Inexpensive
Agave plants do not cost a lot to maintain. They are also fairly inexpensive to acquire.
A bulk purchase of seeds (50 pieces) can be easily acquired for less than $10. Groups of small plants (five live plants) 2 to 5 inches tall can be purchased for less than $40.
Agave Decorating Ideas Are Nearly Endless
Decorating with agave is a blast! Agaves make for great decor with other plants. When considering placement, use them as a border grouping with other plants or pair them with ornamental grasses to provide textural contrast. They add an exotic touch to your yard, garden, patio, poolside, sunroom or anywhere in your home.
Artificial Agave Plants Often Look Just Like the Real Thing
Although agave plants are easy to care for and require very little maintenance, real plants may not always be an option. Many of us travel and are rarely home enough to warrant being plant owners.
Others are very sensitive to allergy triggers, and real plants come with pollen. That’s why artificial agave plants are a great option.
Artificial agave plants look just like the real thing. It’s hard to tell the live plant from the artificial, even when they’re placed side by side. If you’re strapped for time or kill every plant you touch, you can still enjoy the balance, harmony, and awesome decor of agave with an artificial plant.
Wrapping it up
Whether you choose a live agave or a fake one, an agave plant can provide beauty to your home. They’re easy to grow from seeds or as a growing plant.
One large agave is all you need to make a sculptural focal point in the garden, lawn landscape, or any place inside your home.
